Seborrheic dermatitis is a common condition affecting the scalp. It usually occurs in areas where sebaceous glands are concentrated, most commonly on the scalp. It is more frequently observed in men than in women.
The condition is characterized by redness of the skin accompanied by white, light-yellow, or yellow diffuse scaling. Due to mixing with sebum produced by the sebaceous glands, the scales tend to have a sticky rather than dry consistency.
Unlike psoriasis, the scales do not accumulate around the hair follicles but are distributed separately across the scalp.
Possible causes and contributing factors include:
oily skin (seborrhea);
stress and lack of sleep;
hereditary predisposition;
weakened immune system;
neurological or psychiatric disorders;
gastrointestinal disorders;
excessive consumption of sugary foods.
This condition may sometimes resolve without treatment. However, it often follows a relapsing course, with periods of remission and flare-ups.
In addition to addressing internal factors, external scalp care may also be necessary. Procedures such as scalp detox, scalp peels, and scrubs can effectively remove excess buildup and scaling, sometimes providing a noticeable improvement after a single treatment. However, these procedures do not always eliminate the underlying problem permanently.
Such treatments can be recommended by your hairstylist after assessing the condition of the scalp with a trichoscope and determining the most appropriate procedure for your individual needs.
